RObust Header Compression (ROHC) is a standard specification of a highly robust and efficient header compression scheme. It is specially designed for wireless communication links with large packet error rates and long round trip delay. ROHC is one of the key features in providing Voice over IP service in wireless networks. With ROHC, the headers for each VoIP packet can be much compressed such that VoIP packet can be efficiently transmitted over the air interface with improved capacity. In this paper, we evaluate the performance of ROHC scheme for VoIP application in the 1xEV-DO Revision A system. In particular, we examine the compression efficiency and robustness of ROHC algorithm to the packet errors and packet out-of-order over the wireless link. Furthermore, we propose enhancements and configuration recommendations to optimize the ROHC performance for VoIP in 1xEV-DO system.
