Electricity consumption rise for ICT is expected as more and more people are making intensive use of computers, mobile phones, web-based services and high-definition video and television. Following this, energy sufficient solutions are studied in the areas of "data centers and cloud computing" and "telecommunication networks". In this article, we focus on research activities performed to get high data bit rate optical networks with a good quality of service, a good network efficiency with the best energy efficiency. We present some research perspectives related to the development of sleeping mode technique, new transmission data format proposal to match physical and user data bit rate in optical access networks. The evolution of core and metropolitan networks to elastics networks is also presented through research activities on new hybrid optical and electrical switches and P-OADM technique.
