Before the era of high speed computers, symbolic or analytic computation by hand was the standard tool for fluid and heat flow analysis. Then the high speed computers came along, and numerical methods took over as the predominant computational tool. Now as powerful and general purpose computer algebra systems become available, it is likely that symbolic computation will become a more significant computation tool in the future.
