Phase Transformations in ZrO sub 2 - SiO sub 2 Gels

New Image

Transparent sols and gels in the ZrO sub 2-SiO sub 2 system containing up to 60 mole % zirconia were prepared using tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEDS) and zirconium-n-propoxide (ZNP) in the presence of HCl or HNO sub 3. Three routes of preparation of the sols were investigated: a) a prehydrolyzed solution of TEDS in ethanol (1 mole H sub 2 O per 1 mole TEDS) was held at 60C for several hours and then mixed with a solution of ZNR in ethanol; b) the same plus addition of excess of water as concentrated HCL; c) a rather original way of gel preparation consisted in gelation of sol a) and its complete dissolution in the excess of 1N HNO sub 3.
