Photonics - Optical Switching

Now that semiconductor lasers and optical fiber have become widely used for high speed digital transmission, the field of optical switching is emerging as a possible technology for future switching applications. While concepts for switching photons instead of electrons have been around for many years, the technology is still in its fancy. This presentation will review the basic concepts of how photonic switching works and discuss various architectures suited for constructing switches.
