Photoanodes of n-type semiconductors with solar matched band gaps are generally difficult to stabilize in conventional aqueous redox electrolytes having sufficiently positive potentials for respectable open circuit characteristics under illumination. The use of highly concentrated electrolytes which reduce water activity (thus limiting semiconductor surface reaction) in the design of systems that take advantage of the ionic atmosphere influence is an attractive strategy.
