Physics and applications of excitons confined in semiconductor quantum wells.

This is a book chapter for "Heterojunctions: Band Discontinuities and Device Applications" edited by G. Margaritondo and F. Capasso. It reviews the nonlinear optical properties and the electroabsorption effects in quantum well structures near to the optical band gap. Both physics and applications are discussed.
