The optical fiber communications field has been fortunate that the major ingredient used in the manufacture of the currently used low loss silica-based fibers having losses less than 0.5 dB/km is silicon tetrachloride. This substance was already available in commercial quantities at a superb quality because of its use in the semiconductor industry for the manufacture of silicon devices.
