01 January 2000
We are in the midst of explosive growth of mobile subscribers worldwide and the trend is contining. Traditional mobile applications are largely circuit-switched voice telephony. As the industry is moving toward third Generation (3G) wireless systems, new array of applications are becoming possible. The new proposed wide bandwidth technologies offer a variety of technical imporvements over existing multiple access method technologies (GSM, IS-136, IS-95, JDC). In the 3G networks not only voice traffic but also data and multimedia streams are offered. The new wireless applications can be: web browsing, file transfer, video conferencing, geolocation, smart-card applications, virtual-home environment, etc.,.
