The temperature and magnetic field dependencies of the resonant frequency and dissipation of a mechanical oscillator containing a two-dimensional electron system have been measured. A 1.5cm x 3mm GaAs/GaAlAs heterojunction containing a single interface was thinned to 75micron and gold plated on both sides. Clamped on one end, this cantilevered beam formed a high Q (>10 sup 5) mechanical oscillator. The resonant motion of the beam was driven and detected capacitively using a phase-locked loop.
