Recent developments in quantum well structures grown by molecular beam epitaxy will be described, with emphasis on systems with new optical and electronic properties. Quantum wells to which electric fields can be applied show enhanced electro-optic spectral shifts and for a basis for optical switching and logic. Quantum wells with special shapes show new series of electron energy levels and optical transitions. Fabrication of quantum wires and boxes, currently under development, is leading to other new phenomena.
