Raman Study of the Structure of Na sub 2 0-Al sub 2 0 sub 3 -Si0 sub 2 Gels

We have synthesized gels in the Na sub 2 O-Al sub 2 O sub 3 -SiO sub 2 system with silica contents of >70 mole %. The density and surface area of these gels were measured after heat treating them at various temperatures between 150 and 1100C. The structure of the porous and densified gels was studied with Raman spectroscopy and will be discussed in comparison with the structure of the corresponding melt-derived glasses.
