Reaction injection molding.
01 January 1988
Reaction injection molding (RIM) is a polymer processing operation whereby reactive liquid components are mixed, injected into a mold, and polymerized therein to form plastic items. Lower capital and tooling costs for the manufacture of large parts have established the process and sustained its growth. The most important commercialization of RIM has been in the automotive industry where it is used to fabricate bumper covers and fascia. Automotive applications still account for the large majority of material processed, but the use of RIM for business machine and home construction applications is increasing.
