Real Factories Don't Need Good Designs

This talk consists essentially of three parts, all related to assembly. The first topic addresses the issue of the potential Factory Of The Future that is in some sense "Ready to Make Anything". It is argued that while this is the apparent underlying motivation of much current automation and robotics research it makes little sense as a goal outside a few very highly specialized areas, and perhaps not even there.
