Receiver Sensitivity Improvement in Optical DQPSK and DQPSK/ASK through Data-Aided Multi-Symbol Phase Estimation

We present a data-aided multi-symbol phase estimation scheme that improves the receiver sensitivities of direct-detection optical DQPSK and DQPSK/ASK. Sensitivity improvements of 1. 7dB and 1.4dB are respectively obtained for DQPSK and DQPSK/ASK in the linear-regime.
