Retrograde Densification in Bi sub 2 Sr sub 2 CaCu sub 2 O sub 8 Superconductors

Bi sub 2 Sr sub 2 CaCu sub 2 O sub 8 was prepared and sintered at temperatures between 850 to 911C. A unique retrograde sintering behavior is shown whereby the material expands up to about 890C. Densification takes place only between 904-911C with a liquid phase. The retrograde densification is shown to be due to anisotropic particle growth.
