Fast detection of failures is needed for facility restoration in a fault- tolerant or self-healing network. In particular, the issue of fault- tolerance in the signaling network is crucial. Most failure detection techniques in use or have been proposed employ a count of the severely errored seconds (SES), available cyclic redundancy checks (CRC checks) or corrupted flags of an appropriate layer communication protocol, or special facility monitoring sampling frames.
