We review the phenomenology and the statistical theory of mixing in turbulent flows with the emphasis on the recent progress in the understanding of the statistics of large and rare fluctuations. The latter are responsible for the failure of Kolmogorov's theory of turbulence and for the violation of universality. The fundamental importance of multipoint correlators in theoretical and experimental description of turbulent fluctuations is demonstrated.
