Advances in the microwave systems area can be spurred from two directions: from external demands placed on systems to perform new or extended functions and from internal progress in the technology base which generally results in improved performance. After briefly considering some demands, this review will summarize some recent advances in the technology base which particularly affect military applications as well as communication systems.
