Semiconductor Lasers Versus External Modulators: A Comparison of Nonlinear Distortion for Lightwave Subcarrier CATV Applications

In this paper we report on second- and third-order distortion measurements obtained using a two-tone test for several types of InGaAsP buried-heterostructure lasers and LiNbO sub 3 external modulators. These measurements are used to predict the system performance of a 42 channel CATV trunk system and compared to system specifications.
