A description of an equalizer suitable for 18, 60 and 120 circuit (4 keys spacing) submarine cable and designed for use on cableships without "diary" room is given. Electrical and mechanical requirements for this type of equalizer are discussed. The detailed description of the sea housing and the associated sea pressure sealing bulkheads includes explanations of the functions of the cable gland, O seals, the petroleum jelly pressure system and the lead Basket. The method of pressurizing the housing together with the means for checking the effectiveness of the sealing operation are described in great detail. The method of anchoring the sea cable to the end of the housing is outlined. The equalizer unit consists of a factory-sealed fixed unit and an open chassis that can accommodate 6 adjustable equalizer sections or 12 cable simulators. Adjustable sections are made up of factory-sealed resistance, capacity and inductance units. The paper discusses mechanical form, electrical values for each of the basic component units, available range of the loss characteristics, and describes the procedure for design, assembly and wiring of the individual sections to meet the equalization requirements obtained during the laying. Reference is made to a specially designed equalizer unit withdrawal apparatus suitable for use on small cableships.
