At AT&T Bell Laboratories, we have studied a broad range of systems for speech recognition. In particular we have investigated the use of isolated word recognition/based on whole word patterns) for command and control applications in which a single spoken word (or phrase) elicits a recognition response. Typical uses within the telecommunications area include call type recognition and call routing. We have also extensively studied a limited form of continuous speech recognition based on whole word reference patterns. Such systems are often referred to as connected word recognizers since they recognize the speech as a concatenated sequence of whole word reference patterns. Typical applications of connected word recognition systems include digit dialing, credit card entry, and order entry. For these applications only a limited vocabulary of word patterns(e.g., digits, letters of the alphabet) is required. The ultimate goal of our speech recognition research is to be able to recognize fluent speech from a large vocabulary (1000-50000 words).
