Speech Transmission: Filling the Gap Between 2.4 and 16
04 December 1987
Algorithms utilizing complementary strengths of waveform coding and vocoding principles have demonstrated the possibility of speech communication with high quality at rates below 16 kb/s. The required complexity of these algorithms is a good match to the emerging technology of digital signal processors. On the other hand, fundamental problems still remain in terms of required codec delay and sensitivity to noisy channels.
