The internal surface O(S)-O(S) bond stretch is identified with the 1200cm(-1) band of g-SiO2. The selective enhancement (staining) of certain bands by alkali addition is explained naturally by alkali intercalation along cluster internal surfaces, but is incompatible with monolithic continuous random network models.
