We experimentally demonstrate the stroboscopic sampling effect that can occur in optical transmission experiments employing recirculating loops. When the sampling window is shorter than the optical data pattern length, pattern-dependent errors can cause large time-dependent variations in the measured bit-error rate. We also propose and implement a simple method to assure proper sampling statistics.
