This TM is to be published in Springer Series in Surface Science, ed., H. J. Kreuzer, Proceedings of the LASST-ACSIS Joint Workshop on Interface Phenomena: Kinetics of Interface Reactions, New Brunswick, Canada, Sept. 24-27, 1986. The paper reviews the use of optical second-harmonic generation as a time-resolved probe of surface reactions with 100 msec resolution. It also considers the use of pump-probe techniques to study non-equilibrium effects of surface dynamics with 100 fsec time-resolution. A new experiment is presented in which non-thermal disordering of the Si(111) surface is observed in less than 150 fsec of the arrival of an intense 150-fsec-duration optical pulse.
