Study of Metal Surfaces and Clusters by Scanning Tunneling Microscopy
17 June 1988
The reconstruction of metal surfaces, Au(100-(1x5), Au(110)- (2x1), Ni(110)-(5x2), and Ni(110)-Au(7x4) have been studied with scanning tunneling microscopy. The microscope is equipped with a field ion microscope which allows us to study the atomic structure of the tip and the sample. An experimental definition of STM resolution is proposed from the correlation between the tunneling tip geometry and the observed STM image.
