The potential advantages of cooling digital electronics and fiber optics facilities to LN2 temperatures is discussed: X2 improvement in majority carrier mobility, freeze-out of minority carriers, X6 resistivity reduction in Cu, X10 in Al, X10 sup 4 reduction in electromigration, 10-20 W/cm sup 2 heat removal via nucleate boiling, leakage reduction. Minority carrier freezeout eliminates parasitic bipolar latch-up and therefore the need for space-consuming chip isolation; reduced conductor resistance allows smaller traces without electromigration concerns or lower RC time constants; leakage reduction increases DRAM refresh time from ms to hours, making SRAMS buildable with DRAM Densities.
