Surface bonds and reconstructions.

Electrons at surfaces experience an environment different from the ideal, periodic bulk and react by inducing structural changes. A number of different mechanisms driving these surface reconstructions can be identified. For instance, the underlying physics can be described as weak instability in the interacting electron gas or conversely as strong chemical bond formation. Finally, models for structural surface phase-transitions can be derived from these considerations.
