Symbolic Algebra in Mathematics: Dreams and Reality

Computation has been invaluable in gaining insight into the behavior of a variety of mathematical problems in combinatorics, coding theory, algebra, and other fields. Symbolic algebra packages have been used in many of these problems with varying degrees of success, and ways to increase the utility of such programs in mathematics will be discussed.
