Synchronously-pumped D2 gas-in-glass fiber Raman laser operating at 1.56microns.

A synchronously-pumped D2 gas-in-glass fiber Raman laser operating at 1.56microns has been demonstrated. The active medium is molecular D2 diffused into a 100-m-long conventional single- mode solid silica optical fiber. Synchronous pumping with a mode-locked 1.06-micron Nd-YAG laser (120 psec pulse width with 100 MHz repetition rate) produces 50 psec pulses at 1. 56microns with peak output powers of 8W.
