Synthesis of Intonation

This paper will describe issues concerning the structure, perception and synthesis of fundamental frequency (F0) contours in English speech. F0 contours are determined concurrently by factors from a number of independent levels of organization in speech. Three of these factors are (i) the segmental phonetic structure of a given utterance, (ii) the speaker's choice of intonation contour, and (iii) the discourse context in which that utterance occurs.
