Fiber optic remote sensing has many advantages in industrial and biomedical applications. Optical fluorescence based sensors offer simplicity of concept, immunity from external interference, and a potential for miniaturization. The use of optical fluorescence based sensors fulfills a recognized need in biomedical research for monitoring physiological variables such as pH and temperature. These sensors should allow information to be obtained that gives a better understanding of the physiological changes occurring within biological organisms in response to elevated temperatures.
