Taking long repeatered submarine systems to 40Gbit/s and beyond

We review recent advances in experimental demonstrations of transmission at 40 Gbit/s and 100 Gbit/s per channel over submarine distances. Coherent detection, large effective area fibers, and hybrid amplification are the key technologies for these new systems.
