We demonstrate a novel tapered fiber that allows butt coupling to a standard InP ridge waveguide with ~1.8 dB loss, (~1.2 dB if anti-reflection coated). This technology provides a stable, low-loss fiber connection to photonic integrated circuits (PIC) without the need for lenses or PIC spot-size converters.
