One system using electro-mechanical devices and one fully electronic system are described. Both use pulse code transmission in binary form and are suitable for use in power companies, railways, post office and by gas, water and pipeline operators. Each system is illustrated by a block diagram and an example of the pulse train. The mechanical design is discussed of a typical system used for the supervision of an unattended 20 MW transformer and distribution system and is illustrated by photographs. An alternative, more suitable for small systems, uses frequency multiplexing and details are given of a fully transistorized installation. The design permits interworking with the two digital systems and the construction is illustrated by photographs.
