The 1962 Survey of Noise and Loss on Toll Connections
01 March 1964
Most transmission engineering studies require some knowledge a b o u t the noise and loss p e r f o r m a n c e of t h e telephone p l a n t . W h e n transmission objectives are being reviewed a n d new ones are to be set, such knowledge is of particular importance. Because of t h e significance of decisions in this area, it is necessary t h a t t h e d a t a used be representative and give an a c c u r a t e systemwide picture of the performance. Recognizing these needs in t h e current work of setting new message circuit noise objectives, a nationwide sample survey of noise a n d loss on toll connections in t h e Bell System toll network h a s been u n d e r t a k e n . It is the purpose of this article to describe t h e survey and discuss its results. T h e application of t h e findings of t h e survey to t h e setting of new over097 698 TIIE B E L L SYSTEM TECHNICAL J O U R N A L , MARCH 1904 all message circuit noise objectives is treated in an accompanying article.
