The Chuted-Banyan (Canyan) Network: An Efficient Distribution Network for Growable ATM Packet Switching Based on Free-Space Digital Optics
01 January 1992
This paper studies the architecture trade-offs found in a new ATM packet switch that offers several benefits foe applications based on free-space digital optics. In particular, the network also utilizes a deflection routing approach to the contention resolution problem, so the resulting nodes within the packet switch are relatively simple. As a result, it is feasible that they could be constructed using smart pixel technologies. In addition , the network requires a relatively small number of node-stages, so the overall cost of the optical components should be minimized. The network implementation described within the paper could be used as the distribution network within a Growable Packet Switch architecture.
