The Computer as a Musical Instument

In this article we are concerned particularly with the digital generation of sounds useful in music. Such computer generation of complex musical sounds was done first at Bell Laboratories around 1960, as an outgrowth of work on the digital processing of sound. This work made use of a general-purpose digital computer, and hence the term "computer music."
