22 August 1986
Based on its unique societal values, Japan has created a mechanism for close collaboration between its fiercely competing corporate giants. This collaboration - coordination - competition drives the creation of the new technology in Japan and is an element in Japan's ability to capture and dominate international markets in advanced-technology based products. Intercompany collaboration and coordination allow Japan to achieve goals that cannot be achieved by one-company efforts in the U.S. while intense competition assures that Japanese products are cost optimized.
