Structural and electronic properties of the three distinct classes of copper oxide based superconductors will be compared with each other and with other types of superconductors. The purpose of the comparison will be to address the fundamental question of the electron pairing mechanism in copper oxide superconductors and which of the properties are necessary for super- conductivity.
