The Interaction between Nonlinearity and Filtering in Coherent Fiber-Optic Systems

A rigorous theory of nonlinear signal propagation in multi-span wavelength division multiplexed systems, including in-line optical filtering, is presented. Spontaneous emission noise coloring, linear inter-symbol-interference, and the variance of nonlinear distortions are analytically calculated and validated by numerical simulations.
