The Lax-Onsager Regression Theorem Revisited

This paper submitted for inclusion in a festschrift honoring Marlan Scully's contributions to quantum optics should have been presented at the 29th Physics of Quantum Electronics (PQE) because it reviews the work that resulted in my receiving the Willis Lamb medal (shared with Lorenzo Narducci and Herbert Walther) at that meeting. Instead of presenting 30 year old work, I thought it more appropriate to present a paper on how tools used to extract source information from a signal affected by distortion and noise could be used to locate a tumor in a woman's breast via scattering of infrared pulses.
