The characteristics of 3 basic electrostatic lens types were measured by the method previously described [Abstr. 1942B01261, 1943B00836]. The types tested were cyl. lenses of various spacings and dia. ratios, parallel plates with circular apertures on the beam axis and with various spacings, and lenses formed by a cylinder and an aperture in a plate. The characteristics of 9 lenses are presented in the form of object- image distance curves for any ratio of the voltages applied to the electrodes. These curves are a graphical representation of the complete solution of the lens formulae and give directly the relation between all quantities necessary for lens design.
