In view of the "high resolution" of the modern transmission electron microscope, it is tempting to think of it as a super magnifying glass. A more appropriate view of this instrument, however, is that of an electron scattering and filtering station, or alternatively, an imaging electron spectrometer. This view is illustrated by recourse to structure maps, chemically identified structure maps and chemical maps of semiconductors.
