The IP multimedia subsystem (IMS) architecture is emerging as the service architecture to support multimedia services in a converged network. IMS is addressing conversational services. However, in addition to conversational services (for example, voice over IP), streaming-based services (for example, video on demand) and Internet services must also be supported to meet consumer demand. Together, these services are also known as triple-play services. All of these services can be offered today, but each has its own service architecture, which increases complexity and limits service innovation.
