The Role of SS7 in Emerging Intelligent Network Services
03 June 1988
Extensions to Signaling System 7 (SS7) make possible a wide variety of new services in an Intelligent Network (IN). This paper provides a brief overview of such services, and profiles their evolution from the early service specific architectures of 1988 through the service independent architectures of the later (1989) services, and on towards the 1990's architectures. This steady service evolution impacts both the ISDN-UP and TCAP parts of the SS7 protocol, and provides additional rationale for extending SS7 connectivity lower into the network.
