The Role of System Engineers at AT&T-Bell Laboratories

This talk is intended to introduce college students, juniors and seniors, to the field of systems engineering at AT&T Bell Laboratories. It first describes my current project and then explains the roles of the systems engineers on the project. The project is explained to be a forward looking special development effort for potential new AT&T services, with emphasis on receiving customer feedback to impact the development of actual AT&T services. Also explained is the project life and where the systems engineers fit in to it. The participation of systems engineers is detailed from their involvement in the first testing phase through the last. The systems engineers role in setting up our work lab is also explained. Lastly, the different areas from which our systems engineers come is mentioned, along with an explanation of what each of these areas is meant to contribute to the project.
