INTRODUCTION: The soluble polysilanes having the novel structure [R I Si I R'] are a recently discovered sup 1-5 class of polymers. They exhibit a wide variety of physical properties on the nature of R and R', which may be alkyl or aryl. When R is not equal to R', the silicon atoms become pseudoasymmetric, introducing the possibility of variations in stereochemical configuration, which we may view in terms of meso (m) or racemic (r) dyads: R R' | | "-Si-Si-" | | R' R m R R | | "-Si-Si-" | | R' R' r.
