The Technology - Software
04 June 1987
In 1955 and the years immediately following, the telecommunications marketplace will be highly diverse, with many companies providing a large number of different network services, both general and specialized. Software technology will meet the challenges implicit in this large diverse market. Our telecommunications software systems will be highly component oriented allowing rapid modification of system functionality by replacing a software component with another "plug-compatible" software component. A wide variety of customer- specific versions of telecommunications system software will exist, created by vendors as well as network service providers using customer-oriented software developments. Software technology will support both the network service providers customizing their own telecommunications software as well as end users customizing their own line treatment and feature handling. End users will have a high degree of control over their own "virtual network services." Software technology will support the implementation of security and protection mechanisms which will be used by network service providers so as to pass on to end users only those control mechanisms that will not adversely affect the integrity of the network.
